Canonised during the reign of Emperor Frederick III, Margrave Leopold III of Babenberg was recognised by the Habsburgs as a regionally identity-forming saint and projection surface for a sacredly connoted sovereign identity. The fact that the saint also played a role in the communication of the claim to the primacy of the Austrian princes and the rule of the Empire is shown by the proclamations made by Frederick III on the occasion of the coronation of his son Maximilian as King of the Romans in 1486 in the choir hall of St Mary’s Cathedral in Aachen.
The lecture approaches the paintings as concrete acts of communication under the aspect of mediality in order to grasp their reality-shaping effect. Representation of power can thus be understood as the exercise of power and as a strategy for manifesting structures of order and concepts of power. This contributes to an understanding of the appearance of Frederick III and Maximilian I before the imperial public: at the site of the coronation itself, they staged a sacralisation of their own dynasty.
