A group of illuminated documents and manuscripts were produced in and around Vienna around 1500. These can be related to Emperor Maximilian I as well as to a circle of influential people at his court and in the administration of the Austrian hereditary lands on several levels. However, in addition to the proximity to this dense network of people, there are also connections on a purely material level: the painting materials used and the techniques employed form a network whose description it is hoped will strengthen existing links and reveal previously imperceptible connections. By using interdisciplinary methods to analyse the material of selected pieces in a multi-layered way, a closely interwoven group of influential people around the emperor will be researched and their interaction traced in an exemplary manner.
